Tips and Tricks for July

Posted on 1 July 2021
  • We all want colour for winter and violas, pansies and calendulas are perfect to fill that role this winter.
  • Deadheading annuals are required to encourage them to flower.
  • The time is now to prune fruit trees like peaches and nectarines.
  • Roses need pruning in July and the more you cut off the better it is for the growing season. Two thirds of the bush can be taken down to allow for healthy growth and flowering.
  • After all the pruning of fruit trees and roses it is very important to seal the wound with Prune seal.
  • Fertilize your fruit trees with Culterra 2:3:2 to build strength for the growing season and remember to apply water after fertilizing.
  • Roses need love as well so give them a generous feeding of rose fertilizer and remember to water after fertilizing.
  • It is a good time to plant Cabbage and can add an interesting feature, red cabbage can bring some colour to the herb garden.
  • Our soil will be colder so plant your seeds a bit shallower and cover it with grass clippings to help germination.
  • Winter does not mean we can’t plant! It is a great time to plant trees and shrubs because their roots will develop now and you can boost it with Culterra superphosphate or Bonemeal. This will help your plants to be ready when growing season comes.
  • One last tip! Plant some Leptospermum (Tea bush)! It has a lovely texture and shape and will certainly be a nice contrast in the garden.
