For the grow it yourself gardener:
Winter is coming and we can be ready for it by planting broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprouts. Sow your beetroot, carrot seeds and also those last bush beans.
In this heat we can plant the following in a cool place: Lettuce, Swiss chard and parsley.
Remember to feed your fruit trees with a 6:1:5 or Guanoflo.
Winter veggies that can also be sown: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, celery, turnips, leeks, beetroot, carrots, parsnips, radish, lettuce, parsley, Swiss chard, onions and spring onions.
Lawn:
Lawn should not be cut too short, longer grass blades provides protection for the roots and your lawn will require less water.
Water problems?
Replace your plants with a high water requirement with low water users. Grouping the plants with high water needs together in one area can also save you water in the long run especially for people with an irrigation system.
Transplanting shrubs and trees during a drought period can be stressful for the plants as they would require more water to survive the move.
Roses:
Roses can be plagued by red spiders, with frequent rains and humid weather roses are more susceptible to fungal infections like rust, powdery mildew and black spot. It is advised to do some preventative spraying with something like Rose guard or rose protector.
Pruning in summer:
January and February are good months to prune your shrubs, but not too harshly in warm dry times. Plants need enough leaf cover to protect itself from the sun.
Prune the daisy bushes, lavender and pelargoniums after they stop flowering by a third.
