September garden tips
Spring finally arrived! We can finally roll up the sleeves hand feel the soil between our fingers.
First things first! Prune shrubs back that stopped flowering. When all the cold is finally cleared we can cut away the dead pieces that was damaged by frost and also keep an eye on your hedges and topiaries for that quick spring growth that can affect the intended shape.
We can start watering our flowering shrubs and help it along with Nutrifeed.
All the new growth also brings pests to the garden so keep an eye out especially on new growth. Citrus trees will start to get pests and there is a number of ways to deal with them, just ask our sales people and they will provide the correct product. Also very important to follow instruction for safe use of any insecticide.
Weeds will also start to stick their necks out but can be dealt with. Talk to our staff in store to help to make life easier to deal with these challenges.
Very important this Spring is to support your plants growth with compost and fertilizer. A helping of 2:3:2 is definitely a step in the right direction.
Lawn:
Lawn will start to grow now and will benefit from a light trim and a generous application of fertilizer like Protek 7:1:3 and Organics Compost. Always follow the instructions on the package to avoid burning your lawn.
This month is a good time to seed new lawn areas or plugs. They will be well established by the holidays.
Seedlings:
Deadheading will still be important on pansies and violas to keep them flowering.
It is a great time to plant seedlings and herbs now because most of the cold weather is gone. Seedlings like green peppers, tomatoes and lettuce will have strong growth.
Planting this month:
Things to plant now will be Clivias, they will make a great show of flowers and they are perfect for that shade area in the garden where things struggle to grow, they are also waterwise which is perfect for areas that struggle with water.
Daisies and Pelargoniums will add instant color to the garden and both can take full sun and don’t require too much water.
This month is ideal to plant shrubs and trees. One of the trees we all need in our lives is Portulacaria Afra (Spekboom).
